Q1: Is MommaShark Press a Publishing Company?
Q2: Will my novels be “self-published” books with MommaShark Press?
A2: Yes & No. You will be in control of your publishing journey, like any other self-publisher out there. But you will have MommaShark Press’s resources to guild you through that process, and give you the skills and help you need to make a seamless transition from writer to author.
Q3: So then, is MommaShark Press a small press or Small Press Publishing Company?
A3: No. It’s a group of authors and writers who help each other self-publish their work through the guidance of MommaShark Press’s creator, Jenai M. Marek, and her peers. What makes this an “Indie Publishing” group, is that authors who publish under the MommaShark Press’s imprint, gives your published work the allusion of being published by a traditional publishing company, and lets your readers know that you had more help publishing your work than doing it entirely on your own. Therefore, you are not a self-published author with MommaShark Press. You are an Indie Published Author.
Q4: What is a publishing imprint?
A4: A publishing imprint, or a name that a publishing group identifies with, is used in commercially sold books to let readers know what type of book they are reading. Sometimes imprints suggest genre, while others suggest a broader affiliation. When your novels are published under MommaShark Press’s imprint, it lets your readers know that you didn’t publish alone, but had help by other authors and publishing professionals affiliated with this group.
Q5: Does publishing my novel with the MommaShark Press’s imprint give me more credibility than if I choose to self-publish my book?
A5: Yes & No. Imprints can give the impression of publishing with a big or small press publication company. The downside to traditional publishing is that a traditional publisher will take a cut of your profits. And at MommaShark Press, the imprint and group will not profit off of your novel’s royalties in any way. Instead, having the MommaShark Press imprint gives a measure of publishing credibility to your work that you may not have if you self-publish. MommaShark Press affiliation allows you to enjoy the full profits you deserve, without sacrificing your hard earned royalties to a traditional publisher.
Q6: If I choose to self-publish, will that make my work less credible on the market?
A6: Not technically, but perhaps socially, yes. Self-publishing doesn’t make your work less credible, because you didn’t publish with a traditional publisher… but because readers are more likely to pick up a book that is endorsed by a publishing group, being an indie published author holds a little more social acceptance today than does self-publishing. Just remember: SELF PUBLISHING IS A BUSINESS DECISION.
Q7: Why Should I choose MommaShark Press as my Indie Publishing Company? What’s in it for me?
A7: MommaShark Press will allow published and aspiring published authors a network of support and knowledge they may not find elsewhere. The creator of MommaShark Press offers all authors who choose to publish under her publishing imprint a variety of benefits enjoyed only by MommaShark Press Authors. You can view all the benefits here.
Q8: How much will publishing cost me?
A8: Here is a breakdown of the publishing costs for a single book based on a 70K word count:
Editor: $400-1500 (Note: Our freelance editors set their own pricing, and are open to negotiations with our authors)
Illustrator: $10-50 per illustration (b&w only) AND $10-100 per cover art (b&w/full color specific) Note: Illustrators, too, set their own pricing. Negotiations with our illustrators are handled between the writer and the freelance artist.
ISBN Number: $99 per number (I recommend paying a bulk $250 for 10 ISBN numbers for future publications)
Q9: What if I don’t have this start-up capital?

Q14: Are any topics or themes prohibited at MommaShark Press?
A14: Nothing is off the table, with the exception of any material that promotes violence or hate speech. This is not to be confused with topics that address those themes in a way that does not promote them! MommaShark Press believes in the Free Press and freedom of speech … but also acknowledges that we live in world that is standing on a perpetual precipice of chaos. As writers and artists, we should have the privileges and rights to speak freely on hot button issues, while at the same time, exercising a responsibility not to condone or promote ideology that marginalizes, victimizes, or incites violence against anyone.
Q15: Once my book is published … then what?
A15: You have the option to work with one of MommaShark Press’s web designers to start a website that you can sell your books and advertise through, or you can ask for advice from your fellow MommaShark Press authors on what they did for marketing.
Q16: Do I have to utilize MommaShark Press editors, artists, marketers, etc.?
A16: No, but having the option to do so is just one of the perks we offer!
Q17: So is there a catch to any of this?
A17: Not really. When Jenai M. Marek first decided to publish her manuscript, she didn’t know where to start or who to ask. But through online networking and self-researching, she was able to get the information she needed. As a thank you to those authors who helped her get there, she vowed to pay it forward with other authors looking to publish.
Q18: Once I’m published, how can I help other authors?
A18: Stay in the group! Your experience will only add to the pool of knowledge that will help others!
